

Our main business is the manufacture of specialist electronic equipment for satellite communications. One of our main product lines involves cryogenic refrigeration technology, which requires a large amount of electrical energy to supply Helium compressors and water chillers. As part of the Company’s policy to respond to the world climate change issue, we want to investigate how we can reduce our overall energy consumption and our carbon footprint. Specific ideas related to the cooling of Helium compressors will be investigated as well as more conventional energy efficiency methods for the office infrastructure. Alternative means of energy generation will also be investigated. If successful, ideas for saving energy for cooling Helium compressors will be passed on to our end customers including the European Space Agency, for possible implementation in satellite ground stations.
The particular activities required are:
• Prepare an energy consumption audit for the company offices.
• Identify and quantify potential means to reduce energy consumption for the offices areas.
• Investigate possible methods for the reduction of energy consumption for Helium compressor cooling.
• Quantify possible energy saving for compressor cooling by theoretical analysis and experimentation.
• Investigate possible means for alternative energy production based on low or zero carbon emission.
• Prepare an energy reduction plan for Callisto with recommendations, financial budgets and estimates of energy saving, including possible government aids.
This project would suit a student studying Engineering or Physical Sciences. Interests in Space science and/or energy conservation would be an advantage. Suggested level BAC + 3. A good level of competence in spoken & written English would be beneficial. The project is anticipated to start in Feb/March 2008 and have a duration of 5 to 6 months.
